How to intall XAMPP 1.7.2 for Windows XP, Vista 32 &64-bit

INTRODUCTION

This tutorial will show you how to install XAMPP 1.7.2 for Windows XP, Vista 32-bit, and Vista 64-bit.

XAMPP 1.7.2 is an easy-to-install package that quickly helps you setup and begin running your own self-hosting Apache 2.2.12 HTTP web server with PHP 5.3.0, MySQL 5.1.37, and phpMyAdmin 3.2.0.1. This new version has now been designed to easily install and run XAMPP to a USB Flash drive stick, which is something not featured in past versions. It's installer is also quite different as well and it did seem to take a little longer than previous versions to install.

Here's a full list of the software and there versions featured with XAMPP 1.7.2:
Apache 2.2.12 (IPv6 enabled), MySQL 5.1.37 + PBXT engine, PHP 5.3.0, OpenSSL 0.9.8k, phpMyAdmin 3.2.0.1, XAMPP Control Panel 2.5.8, XAMPP CLI Bundle 1.6, Webalizer 2.21-02, Mercury Mail Transport System v4.62, msmtp 1.4.17, FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.32, SQLite 2.8.17, SQLite 3.6.16, ADOdb 5.09a, eAccelerator 0.9.6-rc1, Xdebug 2.0.5, Ming 0.42.

INSTALL ERROR - CORRUPT FILES

Now I will also note I did encounter an error with the first XAMPP package I downloaded due to a corrupt package, so here's the info on that if you're having the same problem:

In the middle of installing XAMPP 1.7.2, it stops and generates the following error:

Some installation files are corrupt.
Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation

CRC failed in xampp\php\icudt34.dll
Unexpected end of archive

To fix it, I went back and selected a different mirror from the sourceforge download area.
The one I personally used and it worked fine was iweb from Canada. You can select a different mirror as shown here:

HELP AND SUPPORT

I'm sure there are going to be several requests for help or support issues, which I'm not equipped to assist.  So instead, I'll go ahead and give you a link to the best support site on the internet (in my opinion), the XAMPP support forums:

Problems reading .php files
Job Muthike Y-m-d H:i:s

I have just installed XAMPP 1.7.2 for windows.I found your video tutorial really
straight forward and easy to follow, and managed to stay with you every step of
the way,upto to testing phpmyadmin.
On trying to open file:///C:/xampp/htdocs/index.php,I am unable to.
file:///C:/xampp/htdocs/index.html opens just fine.
Why is this the case?Do I need to install a program that can read php files? If
so,what would you recommend?..Or is there some pending cnfiguring I need to do o
the XAMPP? If I sound like a complete newbie, its because I am!
Thank you and kindest regards,

Job

Hey Job,
Thank you for the compliments. I noticed you're using file:/// and you cannot
open php files this way.

You need to instead use your web browser and go to http://localhost/index.php
and it'll open just fine. When you go directly to the file in the folder,
you're bypassing the server and therefore it's not processing the PHP file(s)
since it's opening it as a file on your computer and not as a document on your
server.

http:// tells the server to process it and Apache will then use PHP to handle it
and render it to display whatever the PHP file is written to display. By
default, http://localhost/ refers to your C:/xampp/htdocs/ folder.

Please post any further support questions in my support forum, http://forum.myownserver.infobecause trying to offer support in comments is very cluttered and poorly
structured for such.
Feel free to ask for help with any other issues you encounter and I'll do my
best to help.
Thanks!

!!REMEMBER: Support Forums!!

I still keep getting requests for support in the comments of posts and unfortunately I cannot give adequate responses due to the fact there's limited space and it just isn't the right place for support.
I therefore am encouraging visitors to PLEASE go to http://forum.myownserver.info for any support related questions. You will NOT receive any spam or anything you don't specifically subscribe to! I'm very meticulous about this myself and if at any time you need help stopping notifications from posts you previously subscribed to, contact me and I will promptly fix the issue.

Thank you for your participation in this!
