Step 1 - Server Software Installation
This guide will lead you through installing Apache, MySQL, and PHP and phpMyAdmin as these are the most commonly needed.
You can download and install each of those if you wish, but I personally didn't have any luck installing all of them when I first tried. So what I recommend for the sake of saving yourself time and headaches is using XAMPP or WAMP. I personally use XAMPP and think it's simple to install, meets all of my needs (so far) and is all around a great choice. Additionally, WAMP is only for Windows and does not have a PERL addon like XAMPP does. If you might later decide to convert or use a Linux OS instead of Windows, then the familiarity by using the same installer can greatly help.
If you wish to install each Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin seperately, read my footnotes for more information on how to do so.
I've used XAMPP as the foundation of all of my tutorials so far, so I would recommend going with that to avoid any configuration differences.
DOWNLOAD XAMPP/WAMP
Here's where you can get those:
XAMPP - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
WAMP - http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php
Now, you need to install it. You can either follow their installation guide, or I've already assembled a nice video tutorial that will guide you through installing XAMPP.
HOW TO INSTALL XAMPP
For instructions on how to isntall XAMPP 1.7.2 (current version) for Windows, Click Here.
For instructions on how to install XAMPP 1.7.0 & 1.7.1 for Windows, Click Here.
For instructions on how to install XAMPP for Linux, Click Here.
After you've finished installing XAMPP or WAMP, you've completed making your own web server. Isn't that exciting?
But now you must decide what to put on your site and how you want to configure it.
You can go to Step 2 once you've installed XAMPP for some options of what you can add to your website.
Also, there are additional steps you need to take to make it accessible to the public.
** INSTALL SOFTWARE MANUALLY FOR WINDOWS **
If you insist on installing Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin manually, I will first warn you get ready to have your patience tested. It was that very thing that made me start this website after discovering XAMPP and it wasn't until recently I tried revisiting it and made tutorials explaining how to install all of them successfully. I still however recommend XAMPP for the sake of being easy. I will highly recommend considering Linux Ubuntu because it's much easier to install all of these and even easier than XAMPP, but Linux has a bit of a learning curve to it.
I've created the following tutorials to show you how to install each part.
1.) How to Install Apache HTTP Server 2.2.13 .
2.) How to Install PHP 5.3.0 - I also outline one possible fix for some module errors here.
3.) How to Install MySQL Server 5.1.37
4.) How to install phpMyAdmin 3.2.1
